The Reading Rooms Cottage is set in a prime location in the heart of Northumberland, located very conveniently for the A1, ten minutes from Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Bamburgh Castle, Chillingham Castle and the beautiful coastline, 20 minutes to the Cheviot hills, 40 minutes to Newcastle and one hour to Edinburgh.
Northumberland is a region that
is steeped in history, with castles and ancient monuments just waiting
to be discovered. For kids and adults alike, a visit to Alnwick
Castle is a magical experience. The castle, home of the Duke and
Duchess of Northumberland, has stunning State Rooms, a fine art
collection and beautiful gardens. And of course, it is an important
location for the Harry Potter movies – the place where Hogwarts
comes alive! Bamburgh Castle has also been used in many epic films.
This dramatic fortress is a treasury of northern history with fascinating
rooms and exhibits. The area preserves some of the most spectacular
sections of Hadrian’s Wall, which nearly 2,000 years ago marked
the northern frontier of Rome’s mighty Empire. Alternatively,
you can soak up the history and the atmosphere of Holy Island and
the ancient Lindisfarne Priory. Or discover the history of Longstone
Lighthouse.
There are some wonderful opportunities
for keen bird watchers along the Northumberland coastline. For wildlife
enthusiasts, a boat trip out to the Farne Islands to see the bird
sanctuary and seal colony is a must and an unforgettable experience.
To see Mother Nature at her wondrous best and to really appreciate
the stunning beauty of our unspoilt countryside, we recommend you
take time out to explore the Northumberland National Park and Kielder
Forest.
